The Figueira de Castelo Rodrigo Cooperative Winery is located near the foothills of the Serra da Marofa, between the valleys of the Côa and Águeda rivers, adjacent to the Douro River. It was founded in 1956 by 154 members, organizing itself as a cooperative, and currently has approximately 350 members.
The winery is part of the Beira Interior Demarcated Region , in the Castelo Rodrigo sub-region, characterized by a continental climate with Mediterranean influence and soils dominated by schist and sandstone.
This region has a long wine making tradition, dating back to the 12th century, when the Cistercian monks of the Convent of Santa Maria de Aguiar introduced the first knowledge of viticulture to the area.
